Exit Exams

ETS® Proficiency Profile (ETSP)

ALL degree applicants of Tennessee public colleges must take the ETSP, which measures how well students have been prepared for their future education and real-world experiences.  The ETSP is a test of college-level skills in reading, writing, critical thinking, and mathematics and is designed to measure the academic skills developed through general education courses, rather than the subject knowledge specifically taught in those courses. All of the subject knowledge required to answer each question is contained in the question itself or the supporting materials that accompany the question. It is not a pass/fail exam and does not affect a student’s GPA; however, since a portion of Vol State’s annual funding is determined by graduates’ performance on this exam each year, it is important that graduates give their best effort. For more information on the ETSP, go to http://www.ets.org and click on ETS® Proficiency Profile.

Additional Exit Exams may also be required in addition to the ETSP:

  1. Students completing an AAS Business degree must also complete a Business review and take the Business Exit Exam.
  2. Students completing an AAS Computer Information Technology (CIT) degree must take the CIT Exit Exam.
  3. Students completing an AAS Criminal Justice degree must take the Criminal Justice Exit Exam.
  4. Students completing an AAS Entertainment Media Production (EMP) degree must take the EMP Exit Exam.
  5. Students completing a Paralegal program must complete the Paralegal review and take the Paralegal exit exam.
