Directions
Directions is Volunteer State Community College’s New Student Success Program designed to teach you what you need to know about starting college, getting classes scheduled and paid for, buying books and just generally knowing what is going on. Beginning college can be exciting and scary at the same time. That is why we have designed a program that will ease the transition from high school or the work-force into Vol State. There is so much to know about how to make it from one step to the next — everyone needs at least a little help.
It is our intention that after participating in Directions you will come to Vol State equipped with the information you need to make a positive start on your academic future. Whether Vol State is the first step in your college career, or if we are your sole choice for achieving your ultimate career goal, understanding what is expected of you as a student and knowing what to expect of us as an institution is important. We hope that you achieve all of your educational aspirations and doing so starts now. (For information on campus policies and student rights please visit the Student Handbook online.)
Online Introduction
This five module program is broken into three Pre-Work Modules that will help you understand things like:
- different types of degrees offered,
- various offices on campus,
- how those offices can help you
- and different ways to get involved at Vol State.
The three Pre-Work Modules will be done online before you select classes.
Once you have completed the Pre-Work Modules, you can make your reservation for the on-campus portion of Directions or, you can finish Directions online by completing the Required Modules.
We hope that you will choose to come on campus to finish the Directions program; but whichever way you complete the final two Required Modules, you will be familiarized with information like:
- Financial Aid,
- testing requirements,
- parking decals,
- registering for classes
- and lots more.
At the end of each module, there will be a short quiz to ensure you understand everything that is covered. Don’t worry! These quizzes are not designed to be difficult. You can even print a Directions study guide to help you as you work through the modules. You will need Acrobat Reader to open and print the Directions Study Guide.
